Do you feel like you need a recharge?

Everyday we are exposed to toxins in the environment, in addition, those not-so-healthy foods, the caffeine, sugar & alcohol consumption and accumulated stress lead unhealthy habits to start sneaking into our daily lives. Over time, our body gets run down and we start feeling tired, stressed out and usually craving foods that don't serve us.  How do we break this cycle and help our body restore its balance and vitality? You guessed it .. a detox. Which basically means giving our body the time, space and right conditions it needs to deal with those toxic factors that affect our over all health and emotions. Detoxifying it's a natural process of the body, we're simply helping it create the perfect conditions to support the job it was already made to do.

Most of us tend to agree that detox diets are short-term interventions designed to eliminate toxins from the body, promote health and assist with weight loss, but it goes deeper than that.

If you haven't tried it, I encourage you to imagine how would it look like if you had more energy,  felt less stressed and feel rested? But before you decide to jump into it I would like to share some important tips to consider beforehand:

1. Hydrate

I can't emphasize enough the importance of staying hydrated, not only during a detox program but for your overall, long-term health. Daily water consumption aids the elimination of toxic particles and the rejuvenation of cells.

Use meal times as a reminder to hydrate / Carry a water bottle with you throughout the day

2. Exercise

Move your body regularly throughout the day, this will strengthen your lung capacity and ability overtime

Make it fun! Catch up with friends for a walk, take the stairs, walk the dog or try a dance lesson? It's all about enjoying it, so it doesn't feel like a chore!

3. Eat real food

Try to incorporate as many fresh fruits and vegetables in your diet as possible. Juices, smoothies and salads are a perfect place to start! Here are some great recipes to get some inspiration

When in the super market, avoid the middle aisles (were all the packaged food is) Go around and explore the fresh produce. See what's in season! Visit your local farmer's market, read the labels of the packaged foods and follow a simple rule of thumb: If you can't pronounce it, don't eat it!

4. Sleep

This one is particularly taken for granted, but it's very important! Sleep assists with the rejuvenation of cells and helps with the healing and repair of your heart, muscles and blood vessels. Aim to sleep 7-8 hours per night, seriously.

Avoid caffeine before bed, allow 2 hours between your last meal and bedtime, put your phone down, turn off the TV (if possible, do not have a TV in the bedroom) Free yourself from distractions and make your sleep space as comfortable as possible.

5. Get outside

The best-known benefit of sunlight is its ability to boost the body’s vitamin D supply; most cases of vitamin D deficiency are due to lack of outdoor sun exposure, so go out, breathe fresh air into your lungs; receive your daily dose of vitamin D and boost your mood!

Try to more meals outdoors; exercise outdoors every once in a while, instead of eating lunch at your desk, go for a walk outside and sit in a comfortable, relaxing space. Breathe the fresh air from outside!

By assisting our body's natural detoxification system to do its job, chances are a little boost of self-care will be a relaxing and enjoyable experience! Plus, the benefits of feeling amazing are definitely worth it.
